Exercise: One Hour Bootleg

Working in groups of 4-5 people, within 1 hour, locate an item and create a bootleg of it. We'll then add it to our class "Bootleg Archive".

All Possible Copies, bootleg version of All Possible Futures by Jon Sueda, made by Carter Gekiere & Maddy Bruster

Based on our discussions so far, and your time at SNU as a design student, what would be a fun, useful, entertaining, and/or inspiring bootleg to have access to in Building 49?

에너지! by Sulki and Min

Working with your group decide on something you'd like share with Des 22 and others in Building-49. For instance, this could be: a rare book the library has which you wish everyone could read easily; an item to boost our energy — such as our own energy drink; an emblem, badge, uniform to help create a sense of community; a theme song or soundtrack for designing; or any number of bootlegs which change our perspective.

Things to consider...

  • Is the bootleg the contents or the packaging? How does branding hide or enhance the nature of a product?
  • What is the minimum needed to bootleg something? How much does changing something make it new all together?
  • Do you make a digital bootleg? If you bootleg an MP3 file, what characteristics make it a bootleg? The recording quality? The album artwork? What if you "re-record" the song using AI?

While the goal of the project is to manufacture the bootleg within 1 hour, you can also make a prototype to share in-class. The goal of this exercise is to work spontaneously, have fun, and engage with bootlegging as a creative practice.
